On Monday 14th January 2002, students from Earlsheaton High School visited Huddersfield Sports Centre Climbing Wall. They were supervised by instructors organised by Richard Yorke who teaches climbing skills at the wall.

Below are photos and the pupils' thoughts on the event...

Bouldering Belay technique
Checking harnesses The Tower

Photos:
Box/top left: Students from Earlsheaton developing technique on the bouldering wall.
Box/top right: An illustration of the technique used to belay the climbers, with an anchor person at the base of the wall (with the rope passing through a karabiner) and other students controlling the flow of the rope. An instructor holds the tail end of the rope as an additional safety measure.
Box/bottom left: Students are taught to check harnesses carefully. The end of the waist strap always passes back on itself through the buckle.
Box/bottom right: Students belaying and climbing on The Tower.
Single/below: Good power-to-weight ratio is a bonus on steep ground.

Power to weight ratios Pupils' Comments:

"I thought it was ace! Jack Ward was the first to get to the top in our group. When I was climbing back down, Steve was at the other end of the rope and he got lifted up. But my favourite bit was the bouldering wall because you didn't have to use a harness!"

Daniel Lumb aged 12

"Overall I thought it was ace. It was good where me and Danny was scared. There was an overhang where only one kid got to the top. I thought it was great and so did everybody else."

Steven Talbot aged 12

The school has held one previous climbing trip to Huddersfield Wall and plans to run future visits at monthly intervals.
