January's Boulder
SPOT THE BOULDER!
Some day this will be a suburban prow but for the moment it is reached along a grassy lane
from an ancient hamlet. The ground falls away through untouched oak woodland down to the most
serene valley in Kirklees. From the top of the rock, and in the opposite direction,
the eye catches Castle Hill above Huddersfield where outposts, outlooks and
fortifications have existed since ancient times. There is something old about this rock too;
something timeless in its name and something about its position that the ancient people
could not have ignored.
It's an obvious lookout for the modern kids too; a touch of graffiti, the undercut nose sooty
from the campfires of their dens. But, on a bitter late January afternoon, the friction's good
enough to overlook these small failings. There's proper grit crimps here (not those nasty sharp
quarried items) and a small sideways pocket to stack the fingers in and lean away.
A couple of smooth moves for better holds and then the top.
